17-year-old hospitalized after shooting in Champaign; police searching for suspect
Champaign, IL – A 17-year-old male is recovering after being shot late on the night of June 30 in Champaign, and police are continuing to search for the person responsible.
According to the Champaign Police Department, officers were dispatched to a local hospital at approximately 11:06 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting with injuries believed to have occurred in the 1500 block of Hedge Road.
Police said the teenager arrived at the hospital by private vehicle with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hip. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The preliminary investigation indicates the victim had been with a group of people in the 1500 block of Hedge Road when he walked away from the group. As he was leaving, he heard gunfire and was struck in the hip.
Investigators said the identity of the shooter remains unknown, and no arrests have been made.
Detectives continue to canvass the area for witnesses and review any available surveillance footage that may assist in identifying the suspect. Police are encouraging nearby residents and businesses with exterior security cameras to contact the department if they have footage from around the time of the shooting.
The investigation remains ongoing.
