Champaign police investigate shooting that injured 18-year-old, suspect remains at large
Champaign, IL – The Champaign Police Department is investigating a shooting that left an 18-year-old man injured on April 28, 2026, in the 100 block of North Mattis Avenue.
Officers were dispatched at approximately 6:55 p.m. following reports of a shooting with injuries. When police arrived, they learned the victim had been struck by gunfire, resulting in a non-life-threatening injury.
Authorities said officers located the victim a few blocks away in the 700 block of Country Fair Drive, where they provided emergency medical aid with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department. The victim was then transported to a local hospital in stable condition for further treatment.
According to the preliminary investigation, the victim was inside a parking lot when an unknown suspect opened fire. The victim then fled the area by vehicle before being located by officers.
Police said the suspect also fled the scene and has not yet been identified or located.
Officers continue to canvass the area for witnesses and surveillance footage that may assist the investigation. Residents and businesses with exterior security cameras are being asked to contact police if they have relevant footage.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities said additional updates may be released as new information becomes available.
