Fifth Street to close for two weeks as University of Illinois replaces Sherman Hall roof

Champaign, IL – A section of Fifth Street in Champaign will be closed for approximately two weeks while the University of Illinois completes a roof replacement project at Sherman Hall.

According to the City of Champaign, Fifth Street between Daniel Street and Chalmers Street closed on July 17 and is expected to reopen on Friday, July 31, weather permitting.

The temporary closure is necessary to allow crews to safely complete the roof replacement at Sherman Hall.

During the closure, through traffic will not be permitted on the affected section of Fifth Street.

However, city officials said access to all nearby properties will be maintained throughout the construction period.

Motorists are encouraged to plan alternate routes and use caution when traveling near the work zone until the project is completed.
