22-year-old man critically injured in Champaign shooting, suspect flees on foot

Champaign, IL – A 22-year-old man remained hospitalized in critical condition after being shot Wednesday afternoon in Champaign, according to the Champaign Police Department.

At approximately 2:26 p.m. on Aug. 26, METCAD 911 received multiple emergency calls reporting shots fired and a person suffering from a gunshot wound in the area of Carver Drive.

Officers arrived and located the 22-year-old male victim suffering from a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and underwent surgery. Police said he remained hospitalized in critical condition following the procedure.

Although the initial emergency call identified the location as an Urbana address, investigators quickly determined that the shooting had actually occurred in the 1300 block of Carver Drive in Champaign. The Champaign Police Department then assumed primary responsibility for the investigation.

Preliminary information indicated that an altercation occurred at the scene before shots were fired and the victim was struck by gunfire.

Following the shooting, the other person or people involved fled the area on foot, police said.

No arrests had been made as of the department’s latest update, and the investigation remained ongoing.
