Illinois State Police investigate crash involving trooper on I-55

Illinois – Illinois State Police (ISP) are investigating a crash on I-55 southbound at milepost 217 in Livingston County involving an ISP Trooper.

The incident occurred on Sept. 2, 2025, at approximately 2:45 a.m. The Trooper was parked in the right lane behind a disabled vehicle from a previous crash, with emergency lights activated, when a Chevrolet Express van, driven by 59-year-old Samuel Gomez of Omaha, NE, struck the rear driver side of the squad car.

The Trooper was inside the vehicle at the time and reported no injuries. The squad car sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

Gomez was charged with Driving Too Fast for Conditions, Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, and a Scott’s Law/Move Over Law violation.

ISP noted that in 2025, the department has already experienced ten crashes related to the Move Over Law. In 2024, there were 27 such crashes resulting in 12 Troopers injured and one death. In 2023, 21 crashes occurred with seven Troopers injured.

The department reminded the public that the Move Over Law, also known as Scott’s Law, requires drivers to move over when approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle with activated emergency or hazard lights.
