City of Champaign activates sidewalk snow removal ordinance following overnight snowfall
Champaign, IL – The City of Champaign announced that the sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinance is now in effect for the Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown areas following an overnight snowfall that brought at least two inches of snow.
The Public Works Director declared the activation on Monday, November 10, 2025, with property owners required to clear sidewalks by 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11. According to the ordinance, sidewalks must be cleared to the full width or at least forty-eight inches, whichever is less. Corner properties must also clear ramps to maintain a continuous path for pedestrians.
Failure to comply could result in the City clearing the sidewalks at the owner’s expense. The City thanked property owners for their cooperation in helping keep sidewalks safe and accessible for all pedestrians, including those with mobility needs.
Officials also reminded residents and businesses not to push snow into City streets, as it can create hazardous driving conditions. Those living along designated Safe Routes to School are encouraged to ensure sidewalks remain clear for students and families.
