Champaign police investigating fatal shooting near railroad tracks

Champaign, IL – Champaign Police were dispatched at 6:12 a.m. to the railroad tracks near Maple Street and Prairie Street following a report of a deceased man. On arrival, officers located a 45-year-old Champaign man with a fatal gunshot wound. The victim had been deceased for several hours and was beyond lifesaving measures when found.
The Champaign County Coroner was notified, and police secured the scene to begin an investigation. No 9-1-1 calls reporting gunfire were received overnight, and the exact timing of the incident is still being verified.
