Juvenile arrested after fatal shooting of 16-year-old at shopping mall in Champaign

Champaign, IL – The Champaign Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on March 21, 2026, in the parking lot of the Market Place Shopping Mall.

Officers responded at approximately 6:14 p.m. to reports of a fight, during which at least one firearm was discharged. A 16-year-old victim was struck during the incident. Responding officers, with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department, provided immediate life-saving aid before the victim was transported to a local hospital.

Authorities said the victim later died from their injuries and was pronounced deceased at 11:44 p.m. The identity of the victim has not been released due to their age.

Following the incident, a 15-year-old suspect was located and arrested in Urbana. The juvenile was initially taken into custody on a warrant for Aggravated Battery with a Firearm. After the victim’s death, the case was forwarded to the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office for consideration of additional charges related to the homicide.

Police said the investigation remains active as detectives work to determine whether other individuals were involved in the altercation. Officials are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or may have video footage to contact the Champaign Police Department.
