Champaign police arrest second teenager in February shooting investigation

Champaign, IL – Champaign police have arrested a second teenager in connection with a February 2026 shooting incident that left a man with life-threatening injuries, according to a department statement.

On February 18, 2026, officers were dispatched at approximately 10:53 p.m. after reports of gunfire on Stratford Drive. While responding, police received a call from an injured victim located in the 1600 block of Sangamon Drive.

Officers located a 26-year-old man suffering from multiple potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds and provided immediate medical aid with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department until he was transported to a hospital for further treatment. The victim is continuing to recover.

Investigators determined the victim had been in the 900 block of Stratford Drive when at least one suspect opened fire. The victim fled the area in a vehicle while calling for help.

A 17-year-old suspect was previously arrested on March 19, 2026, during a court-authorized search warrant in the 400 block of Briar Lane.

Charges included aggravated battery with a firearm and attempted murder. Police said two firearms were recovered during that search.

On April 9, 2026, a 16-year-old was arrested during another court-authorized search warrant in the 900 block of Fairoaks Drive and faces charges connected to the investigation. Because both suspects are juveniles, additional identifying information is not being released.

Champaign police said the investigation remains ongoing and are asking anyone with additional information to contact the department or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
