17-year-old killed and 19-year-old injured in Champaign shooting, police seek community assistance

Champaign, IL – A 17-year-old male from Champaign was killed and a 19-year-old man injured in a shooting on February 9, 2026, according to the Champaign Police Department.

Police were dispatched at 6:43 p.m. to the 800 block of S. Mattis Avenue following reports of shots fired. Officers arrived to find the 17-year-old inside a vehicle in a parking lot, suffering multiple potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. Champaign Fire Department personnel and officers immediately provided emergency medical care before the victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Around 7:00 p.m., police were notified that a second individual, a 19-year-old man from Champaign, had arrived at a hospital by personal transport with a gunshot wound. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Authorities are actively investigating the incident and are seeking assistance from the community to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting. Police are canvassing the area for witnesses and video footage, and residents or businesses with exterior cameras are encouraged to come forward. No arrests have been made at this time.
